On Polygamy
“The law is very clear on this matter, but the practice of it is another matter. Men still use the threat of abandonment to get their wives to ‘behave’. They believe that it is their right to get up and marry the next woman and never have to pay for the previous wife, their children or for the devastation that his actions can cause. Women however, cannot commit polygamy at all. Not in the law of the land and not in the law of the faith.
Under the Polygamy section in Muslim Family Laws Ordinance (1961): “No man, during the subsistence of an existing marriage, shall except with the previous permission in writing of the Arbitration Council, contract another marriage, nor shall any such marriage contracted without such permission be registered under this Ordinance.” “
